....and strongest opinions are rarely reached rapidly. We privately mull over the issues that seem most important to us and we question ourselves over time. But once we have arrived at a position, we frequently forget some of the steps that we have taken to get to them. We feel that we are where we are, and have not arrived there by accident. It is hard not to feel affronted by the suggestion that we have wound up in the wrong place.
If we have to encourage anyone to question their views, we really ought to do so gently.
